Bulawayo football Giants, Highlanders FC, have received a landmark sponsorship package worth US$1 million from prominent businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivhayo.

The donation was made in honour of the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo.

According to the announcement, an initial US$250,000 in cash has already been pledged, earmarked for player welfare, administrative expenses, and the acquisition of new talent.

The sponsorship is part of a comprehensive funding package to be disbursed over the coming year.

Chivhayo’s motivation for the sponsorship is deeply personal, tied to a final emotional conversation with his late uncle, VP Nkomo, in December 2012.

As Chivhayo shared, “Highlanders is more than a football club—it is a living symbol of heritage, unity, and pride for the people of Bulawayo and Zimbabwe at large.”

Chivhayo further explained the significance of the sponsorship, stating, “This is about honouring my uncle’s wishes and giving back to a community and a club that have shaped our national identity.”

The sponsorship is expected to provide critical support to Highlanders FC ahead of the 2025 Premier Soccer League season.

The club’s historic and cultural legacy is expected to be preserved and promoted through this funding.

Chivhayo’s contribution has been welcomed by the club and its fans, who have been eagerly awaiting the new season.

The sponsorship is seen as a significant boost to the club’s prospects and a testament to Chivhayo’s commitment to giving back to the community.
