The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested two suspects, Abraham Tendayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu yesterday in connection with the US$4.4 million bank heist at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo last year.
The pair was apprehended on July 5, 2025, in South Africa, and ZRP is now working on their extradition to Zimbabwe.
According to Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national spokesperson for the ZRP, detectives are pursuing other suspects linked to the robbery.
The crime was orchestrated by a gang of six armed robbers who ambushed a Safeguard Security cash-in-transit van outside the Ecobank branch on October 3, 2024.
The robbers, brandishing AK-47 rifles and pistols, overpowered the security guards and made off with the cash using a white Ford Ranger single-cab getaway truck.
Investigations revealed that the number plates on the getaway car were stripped from a Mazda Demio.
The ZRP is working to bring the suspects to justice and recover the stolen funds.
The arrest is a significant breakthrough in the case, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward .
