Nigeria’s former president Muhammadu Buhari died yesterday in London following a prolonged illness. He was 82.
His death was announced by President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson via the social media platform X, stating that Buhari died at around 4:30pm yesterday.
Buhari made history in 2015 when he became the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s modern era to defeat a sitting president at the polls, unseating Goodluck Jonathan in an election widely praised for its credibility.
He initially came to power in the 1980s through a military coup and later rebranded himself as a civilian politician, adopting a softer image and declaring himself a converted democrat.
He is known for his anti-corruption stance and was seen by many supporters as a reformer.
Despite his initial popularity and promises, Buhari’s presidency was marked by challenges, particularly in security and economic management.
