A community is in mourning after a nine-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of unattended dogs in Bonvalley farm near Darwendale in Zvimba district this past Friday.

The horrific incident occurred while the child was playing with other minors.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, officially confirmed the fatal attack, which took place at Bonvalley farm.

Inspector Kohwera stated that preliminary information indicated that the dogs were not properly secured or supervised by their owner at the time of the attack.

“The tragic loss of this young life is deeply concerning,” Inspector Kohwera said.

“It is confirmed that a nine-year-old boy succumbed to injuries sustained after being bitten by unattended dogs at Bonvalley farm in Darwendale. The attack happened during a time when he was engaged in play with other children.”

Kohwera added that the police are compiling a comprehensive report and will release further details once the investigation is complete.

Authorities have acted swiftly regarding the dogs’ owner, who has not been publicly named.

The individual was arrested following the incident. However, a procedural error complicated the legal process over the weekend.

The suspect was mistakenly taken to the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court on Saturday instead of the Banket Magistrates’ Court, which holds jurisdiction over cases arising in the Darwendale area.

Consequently, the court appearance was aborted.”The arrest of the dog owner signifies the seriousness with which authorities are treating this preventable tragedy,” a source familiar with the investigation noted.

“The jurisdictional error caused a delay, but the legal process is now back on track. The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to be brought before the Banket Magistrates’ Court without fail this coming Monday.”

The owner is likely to face charges related to culpable homicide or negligence leading to death, pending the final police docket.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local farming community and raised urgent questions about pet owner responsibility and the control of potentially dangerous animals, especially in areas where children are present.

Residents expressed profound grief and anxiety over the safety of their children.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare realized right here in our community,” shared a local community representative who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.

“Our hearts break for the family. We demand strict enforcement of laws regarding dangerous animals and proper confinement. Such a senseless loss must never happen again.”

The representative called for immediate community meetings to discuss safety measures.

Animal control experts often emphasize the critical importance of responsible pet ownership, particularly for larger breeds or dogs with protective instincts.

“Owners have an absolute duty to ensure their animals are securely contained and can not pose a threat to the public, especially vulnerable children,” emphasized a Harare-based veterinary officer.

“Simple measures like adequate fencing, proper socialization, and never leaving dogs unattended in open areas accessible to others could prevent such devastating outcomes.”

The specific breeds involved in Friday’s attack have not yet been disclosed by police.

The identity of the young victim is being withheld, pending formal notification of all relatives and community protocols.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police continue their investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the attack.

The case is expected to draw significant attention when the dog owner appears in the Banket Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
