A train driver’s quick thinking saved the life of a 23-year-old woman who was walking on railway tracks while listening to music as the train approached.
The dramatic incident, confirmed by the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), occurred over the weekend in Mutare.
The woman, identified as Lisa Shumba, was reportedly walking along the railway line with earphones in, completely unaware of the train bearing down on her.
The alert engineman saw Shumba and, realizing she couldn’t hear the train’s horn, hurled a water bottle from the locomotive, causing it to land directly in front of her.
“She turned, saw the train, and jumped aside though the locomotive still hit her slightly,” the NRZ statement read.
Shumba managed to leap out of the train’s path, but the locomotive still made minor contact with her.
