The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released alarming statistics on road traffic accidents during the 2025 Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays, revealing a sharp rise in accidents compared to the same period last year.
According to ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the country recorded 196 accidents between August 11th and 13th, 2025, resulting in 24 fatalities and 96 injuries.
These figures are “deeply concerning” compared to the same period in 2024, when 149 accidents were recorded, resulting in 16 deaths and 77 injuries.
Commissioner Nyathi attributed some of these accidents to reckless driving, speeding, mechanical faults, and overtaking errors.
Two major tragedies highlighted by Commissioner Nyathi included a fatal crash on August 11 along the Mutare-Masvingo Road, where six Zion Christian Church congregants were killed and 16 others injured when a hired Quantum vehicle veered off the road and overturned.
Another deadly crash occurred on August 12 along the Bindura-Shamva Road, where four people died and 17 others were injured after a kombi’s rear tyre burst, causing it to veer off the road.
Other fatalities included two people killed in a Toyota Hilux crash on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, and a 16-year-old girl run over by a lorry in Checheche.
Pedestrians were also among the victims, with one killed in Hatfield and another injured in High Glen.
Despite the grim statistics, Commissioner Nyathi commended public transport operators for cooperating with police during the period.
“We urge all motorists to service their vehicles, avoid speeding, and overtake only when safe,” he said.
“Pedestrians should wear reflective clothing at night. Above all, drivers must adhere to road rules to stop this needless loss of life.”
The ZRP’s call to action emphasizes the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices.
As the nation mourns the loss of life, it is crucial for motorists and pedestrians alike to prioritize safety on the roads.
With the festive season approaching, the ZRP’s message is timely, and it remains to be seen whether these efforts will yield a reduction in road traffic accidents in the coming months.
