Rufaro Stadium pitch, once a pride of Harare football, has deteriorated significantly due to relentless use and insufficient recovery time.

The playing surface is now patchy and uneven, raising serious concerns about player safety and game quality.

Continuous match schedules, combined with inadequate maintenance protocols, have left the turf worn out and struggling to regenerate.

The situation worsened after a recent function, which added further strain to the already fragile surface.

Despite the damage, there are no immediate plans to halt usage.

In fact, Scotlance FC is scheduled to host ZPC Kariba at Rufaro this Friday, followed by a Premier Soccer League clash between Caps United and Yadah Stars.

The back-to-back fixtures offer no window for rehabilitation, deepening fears about the long-term viability of hosting top-tier matches at the venue.

Overwatering has been identified as a major contributing factor to the pitch’s decline.

Instead of aiding recovery, it has led to waterlogged areas and weakened root systems.

Improper irrigation timing and frequency have done more harm than good, and without a scientifically guided maintenance plan, the grass struggles to recover between games.

The problem is compounded by the sheer number of teams relying on Rufaro as their home ground.

Premier League sides Dynamos, Caps United, Herentals, and Scottland all host matches there, effectively turning the stadium into a shared venue with little downtime.

Even Division One outfit N’ombeyaora FC uses the facility, increasing the frequency of use.

With no alternate high-standard pitches available, the burden on Rufaro continues to grow, threatening both player performance and the stadium’s future as a competitive venue.

The authorities need to take urgent action to address the issue and ensure the pitch is restored to a safe and playable condition.

Failure to do so could have serious consequences for the players, the teams, and the league as a whole.

The fate of Rufaro Stadium as a premier football venue hangs in the balance, and it remains to be seen whether the necessary measures will be taken to save it.
