President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have held discussions regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine, which is now in its third and a half year.

The conversation followed Putin’s recent meeting with President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska.

The talks, which took place a week after an initial telephonic discussion between the two leaders, focused on the ongoing peace process.

President Putin reportedly expressed satisfaction with the outcome of his meeting with Trump, noting an emerging alignment on the peace process.

He also acknowledged and appreciated South Africa’s involvement in advancing efforts to end the conflict.

President Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s support for peace initiatives aimed at bringing a lasting end to the war.

The leaders also agreed to continue discussions to strengthen the strategic relationship between their two countries.

The war in Ukraine began three and a half years ago with a full-scale Russian invasion.

Since then, South Africa has positioned itself as a potential mediator, with President Ramaphosa previously expressing his country’s willingness to aid in peace efforts.
