A 43-year-old man from the Madlambuzi area in Matabeleland South has been arrested after he allegedly killed five people and injured two others in a horrific attack, police have confirmed.
The victims, who ranged in age from six to 101, were reportedly assaulted with a Mopani log and a sharp object.
According to Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the suspect, Phamani Sibanda, is believed to be mentally ill.
The deceased have been identified as Elliot Khupe, 101; Butho Tshuma, 97; Catra Matsika, 72; Constance Sibanda, 66; and Tiffan Surprise Ndlovu, a six-year-old.
Two other individuals, a 90-year-old and a 41-year-old, sustained injuries in the attack and are currently receiving treatment at Plumtree Hospital.
Commissioner Nyathi stated that the attack highlights the critical need for individuals with mental health challenges to be placed in appropriate medical institutions where their behavior can be monitored.
He urged families to seek professional help and institutional care for relatives who are mentally ill to prevent such tragedies.
