An Econet employee and his three accomplices were arrested and remanded in custody after they were accused of robbing the company’s Mvurwi branch of cash and property worth a combined US$62,000.

The heist reportedly involved an inside job, with an employee allegedly tipping off his brother-in-law, who remains at large.

The suspects, Elias Mutonya (39), Tafadzwa Mukanha (24), Munyaradzi Mucherahodzi (29), and Edson Murambidzi (34), appeared before Magistrate Amos Mbobo, who remanded them in custody until September 12.

Mutonya, who works at the Mvurwi branch, is accused of masterminding the robbery. His brother-in-law, Rashid Adam Chipanga, is still wanted by authorities.

According to the state prosecutor, Clever Nyapfani, the plot was hatched in May 2025.

Mutonya allegedly told Chipanga about a large amount of cash at the branch, prompting Chipanga to recruit the other three men.

On May 8, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the group allegedly stormed the premises.

They reportedly threatened a security guard with a .38-inch special revolver, tied him up, and forced open the door.

The suspects allegedly made off with US$55,000 in cash, along with 32 boxed cellphones, two Wi-Fi routers, and a black ThinkPad laptop. The total value of the stolen items and money is estimated at US$62,000.
