A series of wildfires has ravaged Mazowe, Mashonaland Province, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana, the blazes destroyed 32 households across three villages in Wards 9, 12, 14, and 19, affecting 127 people.

The fires in Wards 9 and 12 were allegedly started by a mentally-challenged woman who burned plastic on a windy day.

Mangwana said, “Police are searching for the woman involved to assess her condition for treatment and risk management.”

The veld fires in Wards 14 and 19 were likely exacerbated by the windy conditions.

The fires also resulted in substantial agricultural losses, particularly at Nyomber Estates.

Mangwana reported that one hectare of wheat, 2000 hay bales, and critical farming infrastructure were destroyed.

“Fortunately, no fatalities were reported,” he added, providing some relief amidst the devastating situation.

The government has sprang into action to assist those affected.

Mangwana confirmed that “The CPU system has been triggered” to provide support to the affected communities.

The authorities are working tirelessly to provide basic aid to the 127 people left homeless by the fires.

The destruction caused by the veld fires has left many families without homes or livelihoods.

The loss of agricultural produce and infrastructure will likely have long-term effects on the community’s food security and economic stability.

As the situation continues to unfold, the government and humanitarian organizations will need to work together to provide support and relief to those affected.

The incident highlights the importance of veld fire prevention and management.

Communities must remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.

The government and relevant authorities should also continue to educate the public on the risks associated with veld fires and the importance of prompt reporting.
