A Mbare Magistrate has sentenced a commuter omnibus driver to over two years in prison for failing to stop at a red traffic light at the busy intersection of Simon Mazorodze Road and Remembrance Drive in Mbare last month.

Mandava, the convicted driver, was found guilty of reckless driving that could have resulted in loss of life or serious injury.

In addition to the prison sentence, Mandava will serve six more months for driving without a valid license.

He was also fined $100 for ignoring police instructions and $200 for providing false information to authorities.

During his arrest, Mandava initially used a fake name, but police investigations later revealed his true identity, leading to the additional penalties.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about road safety in Zimbabwe.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, road accidents are often attributed to human error, including failure to obey traffic signals. In 2023, the country recorded a notable reduction in road accidents and fatalities during the festive season, but the numbers remain high, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations.

Drivers who fail to comply with traffic laws put themselves and others at risk of serious harm or even death.

The Zimbabwean authorities have been working to improve road safety through increased enforcement and public awareness campaigns.

Mandava’s sentence sends a strong message to drivers who disregard traffic rules.

As the country continues to grapple with road safety challenges, it is essential for drivers to prioritize responsible driving practices and respect traffic laws.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce traffic regulations to ensure safety on the roads.
