An ambulance technician and his two accomplices were convicted and sentenced for stealing $1,260 and airtime from a road accident victim they were supposed to assist at a accident scene.
Edius Mugonegwa, 40, a Redcliff Municipality ambulance technician, along with Pride Makamba, 25, and Anashe Mukwamba, 23, were found guilty of theft by the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The conviction followed a swift investigation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kwekwe.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the theft occurred on September 7, 2025, after Mugonegwa responded to a crash on the Kwekwe-Redcliff Road.
While Mugonegwa was providing first aid, a blood-stained wad of cash fell from the victim’s pocket.
“On the 7th of September, Mugonegwa responded to an accident along Kwekwe, Redcliffe Road.
While administering first aid, a blood stained cash fell from the victim’s pocket. Instead of safeguarding it for the victim, Mugonegwa, Makamba and Mukwamba connived to convert the money to their personal use.
“The victim later discovered that his cash was missing upon regaining consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital and reported the matter to the police.
“Swift investigations by CID Kwekwe led to the arrest of the three and part of the stolen money was recovered.” Read the statement.
Mugonegwa, the main perpetrator, received an 18-month prison sentence. Three months of his sentence were suspended for five years on the condition of good behavior.
The remaining 15 months were converted to 825 hours of community service.
Makamba and Mukwamba were each sentenced to 12 months in prison, three months were suspended for five years, and the remaining nine months were converted to 315 hours of community service each.
