Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been formally nominated as a candidate for the 2026 Presidential Elections this morning, paving the way for his bid to extend his nearly four-decade rule.
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Returning Officer for Presidential Nominations, confirmed that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate had met all the statutory requirements outlined in the Presidential Elections Act, Cap 179.
The nomination took place at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Lweza.
Following the nomination, President Museveni is scheduled to drive from the EC headquarters to Kololo, where he will join thousands of NRM supporters to celebrate his nomination and officially launch his campaign.
According to the Presidential Elections Act, a presidential aspirant must be a Ugandan citizen by birth, a registered voter, and at least 18 years old. They are also required to submit certified copies of educational qualifications showing a minimum of Advanced (A) Level or its equivalent.
The law further mandates that a candidate’s nomination be supported by a minimum of 100 registered voters from at least 98 districts, which constitutes two-thirds of all districts and cities in Uganda.
