In a landmark move, Malawi’s President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced the abolition of school fees for both primary and secondary education, effective January next year.

This bold decision aims to ensure equal access to education, empowering young Malawians regardless of their economic background.

Speaking at the Mulhakho wa Alhomwe Cultural Festival, Mutharika emphasized the importance of education in driving development.

“No parent will have an excuse not to send their children to school. Education is key to development, and we want discipline and hard work if Malawi is to move forward,” he said.

The decision has been widely praised, with education rights activist Benedicto Kondowe commending Mutharika for fulfilling a campaign promise.

“This is a move in the right direction and one that demonstrates true leadership and compassion,” Kondowe said.

The abolition of school fees is expected to benefit thousands of students, improving enrollment rates and reducing dropout rates.

However, some critics argue that free education might compromise quality, citing Malawi’s struggling education system.

Mutharika’s government plans to fund the initiative through recovered resources from anti-corruption efforts, allocating 16.5% of the national budget to education.

Experts estimate that curbing corruption could fully fund free primary and secondary education, saving 14.5% of the budget.

The Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA) has welcomed the decision, urging private schools to improve standards and justify fees.

“Education is the foundation of national development, and by removing financial barriers, the government has given hope to thousands of families,” said ISAMA President Bishop Wycliffe Chimwendo.

As Malawi embarks on this new chapter, international observers will monitor implementation, funding, and quality education standards. With this bold initiative, Mutharika’s government aims to transform the lives of young Malawians, securing a brighter future for the nation.
