Zimbabwe’s cricket team has taken control of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, thanks to a stellar performance from Brad Evans, who claimed a career-best 5 for 22 on his return to Test cricket.

Afghanistan was bowled out for just 127 runs at the Harare Sports Club, with Evans’ impressive bowling display setting the tone for the day.

“Mentality is everything, and I made sure my mind was in the right place,” Evans said, reflecting on his successful comeback.

“It’s not just about physicality, but also about being mentally prepared for the game,” he added.

Afghanistan’s innings was marked by a collapse, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers taking control after the visitors had started strongly.

Blessing Muzarabani, Tanaka Chivanga, and Evans led the charge, with Evans’ five-wicket haul being the highlight of the day.

In response, Zimbabwe made a steady start, with Ben Curran and Nick Welch adding 95 runs for the second wicket.

Brendan Taylor joined Curran, and the pair played some impressive strokes before bad light forced an early stoppage.

At stumps, Zimbabwe held a narrow three-run lead with eight wickets still in hand, putting them in a commanding position heading into Day 2.

“We have to come with a positive mentality,” Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said.

“One wicket can change the complexion of the game, and that’s what happened in our innings.”

Zimbabwe will look to build on their lead on Day 2, with Curran and Taylor on the crease.

The visitors, however, will be hoping to mount a spirited comeback.
