The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for heavy rains and thunderstorms in parts of the country this week, following a rainy weekend across the nation.
According to SAWS, severe thunderstorms are expected to bring damaging winds, intense downpours, and hailstones that could harm crops, vehicles, and property.
“We’re urging residents to take cover, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storms,” said SAWS forecaster Nkosinathi Dlamini.
The combination of strong winds and hail can lead to localized flooding, uprooted trees, and road blockages.
The provinces expected to be most affected include the Free State, western North West, KwaZulu-Natal, and north-eastern Northern Cape.
SAWS has placed a Level 2 yellow warning on these provinces, highlighting the risk of severe thunderstorms.
Johannesburg residents have been urged to take extra precautions as severe weather conditions intensify across Gauteng.
“Residents are urged to remain alert, follow official updates from the South African Weather Service, Johannesburg EMS, and report any emergencies,” said Phasha, spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Management Services.
Motorists are advised to drive slowly, keep headlights on during rain, and avoid flooded roads and bridges.
The public is also cautioned not to attempt to cross any rivers or streams as there is a danger to life due to strong currents.
The National Sea Rescue Institute has warned people to be cautious around the coastline, saying that the spring tide phase may contribute to stronger than normal rip currents.
“Swim at beaches protected by lifeguards. Inland water users are also urged to be cautious,” the NSRI added.
The SAWS has urged residents to stay updated through official channels and prepare for sudden weather changes as the rainy season gains momentum.
