The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has terminated the contract of Warriors Coach Michael Nees with immediate effect, following a series of poor results.
The decision was announced by ZIFA in an official statement, citing the need for a change in leadership to revitalize the national team.
According to ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi, the association is committed to strengthening its technical development programs and ensuring continued progress in all areas of the game.
“The Association takes this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Nees for his efforts and contributions to Zimbabwean football during his tenure,” Magwizi said.
Nees, who was appointed in July 2024 on a two-year contract, had struggled to deliver consistent performances, managing only two wins in 14 matches.
His tenure was marked by intense scrutiny over his tactical decisions and team selections, with many questioning his understanding of the local football environment.
The decision to terminate Nees’ contract has been met with widespread support from fans and former players, who had been calling for his dismissal.
“We will now be going into tournaments with a weaker ranking, and we will be paired against the big boys,” said Adomsi Mukasi, Vice President of the National Soccer Supporters Association.
“ZIFA should know that Nees’ continued stay as Warriors coach is a big disservice to the nation.”
Former Warriors player and coach Gibson Homela echoed these sentiments, arguing that ZIFA had been too lenient with Nees and his technical team.
“They must all go. A local coach would not have been treated with kids’ gloves like this,” Homela said.
The termination of Nees’ contract marks a significant shake-up in Zimbabwean football, with ZIFA now set to appoint an interim coach to lead the team in upcoming tournaments.
The move is seen as a bold step towards revitalizing the national team and restoring pride in Zimbabwean football.
