North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued a secret order banning suicide, labeling it “an act of treason against socialism.”

The directive comes after a significant surge in reported suicide cases, with the South Korean National Intelligence Service reporting a 40% increase compared to last year.

According to reports, local government officials will be held accountable for preventing suicides in their jurisdictions.

“The responsible officials will be held jointly accountable, because ‘suicide is a clear social challenge and treason against the country,'” Kim’s order emphasized.

The ban is part of a broader effort to address the growing issue of mental health in North Korea, where poverty and starvation have taken a devastating toll on the population.

Radio Free Asia reported that 35 suicide cases were recorded in Chongjin and nearby Kyongsong county alone this year, with most cases involving entire families taking their lives together.

A North Korean official described the situation as dire, stating, “Despite the suicide prevention policy ratified by the General Secretary, the officials were not able to come up with an appropriate solution.”

The official attributed the rise in suicides to severe poverty and starvation, saying, “Most of the suicides were caused by severe poverty and starvation, so no one can come up with a countermeasure right now.”

The government’s efforts to curb suicides have been met with skepticism, given the dire economic conditions and widespread human rights abuses in the country.

As Kim Jong Un’s government works to address the issue, concerns remain about the regime’s approach to mental health and human rights.

In a country where the government exercises total control over citizens’ lives, the ban on suicide raises questions about the regime’s priorities and its willingness to address the root causes of the problem.

With the international community watching, North Korea’s response to the crisis will be closely scrutinized.
