The Maldives has become the first country in the world to implement a generational tobacco ban, prohibiting anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products.
The ban, which is taking effect this November 2025, aims to protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation.
According to the Ministry of Health, the new law is part of the country’s efforts to reduce smoking-related diseases and promote a healthier lifestyle among youth.
The ban applies to all forms of tobacco and extends to tourists visiting the island nation.
Retailers are required to verify the age of buyers before selling tobacco products, with penalties of up to 50,000 rufiyaa ($3,200) for selling tobacco to minors.
The Maldives has also banned the import, sale, distribution, possession, and use of cigarettes and vaping products, regardless of age.
Individuals caught using vape devices can face a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa ($320).
“Preventing young people from starting to smoke is of the highest importance if we want to avoid creating another generation of smokers,” said Dr. Einat Fireman Klein, a health expert.
