The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has appointed Marian “Mario” Marinica as the new Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Warriors, on a one-year contract.
Marinica, a highly accomplished UEFA Pro Licensed coach, brings over 25 years of international coaching and technical expertise garnered across four continents.
According to ZIFA, Marinica’s extensive career includes experience with prestigious clubs such as Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Inter Milan, AS Monaco, and Liverpool FC, alongside national team roles with Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi, and Liberia.
His most notable recent success was leading Malawi to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the nation’s best-ever finish.
“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe,” said ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi.
“His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era. His appointment reflects ZIFA’s commitment to building a competitive and sustainable football structure that delivers results both on and off the pitch,” he added.
Marinica’s immediate task will be to prepare the Warriors for upcoming international friendlies against Algeria and Qatar, as well as the AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign.
“My mission is to build a united and competitive Warriors side that can challenge the best on the continent,” Marinica said.
“I believe with hard work and belief, we can restore pride to Zimbabwean football,” he said.
The 60-year-old coach has a proven track record in African football, having guided Malawi to their best-ever AFCON finish and later steering Liberia to become the highest climber in the FIFA Rankings in June 2024.
Marinica’s appointment is seen as a significant step towards revamping Zimbabwean football, with ZIFA hoping to build a competitive and sustainable football structure.
Marinica will assume his duties with immediate effect and will also play a key role in mentoring local coaches as part of ZIFA’s long-term development plan.
With his wealth of experience and modern football philosophy, Marinica is expected to bring a new era of success to Zimbabwean football.
