China has pledged zero tariffs on all Zimbabwean goods, a move expected to significantly boost exports and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.
The announcement was made by the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe through its official X account during the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.
The zero-tariff policy is poised to supercharge more Zimbabwean goods into the Chinese market, according to the Chinese Embassy.
Zimbabwe already enjoys a trade surplus of over US$1 billion annually with China, one of its top three trading partners.
The country’s exports to China have risen from US$766 million in 2015 to US$2.44 billion in 2024, while imports have increased to US$1.4 billion, driven mainly by machinery and equipment.
ZimTrade’s client advisor for export development, Kupakwashe Midzi, welcomed the development, saying the preferential framework would lower trade barriers and allow Zimbabwean products to compete more effectively.
“The preferential framework helps lower barriers and enhances our ability to showcase goods competitively, thereby opening significant doors for our producers,” Midzi said.
The zero-tariff policy is expected to stimulate trade volumes, support local producers, and strengthen the long-standing economic partnership between Zimbabwe and China.
Key exports to China include tobacco, minerals, steel alloys, and macadamia, while new protocols, such as blueberry exports, are expected to further deepen trade ties.
China is Zimbabwe’s largest buyer of tobacco, accounting for over 50% of exports.
The country is also a significant exporter of minerals, including steel alloys, to China.
Additionally, Zimbabwe is exporting macadamia nuts to China, and has started exporting blueberries, with production growing at an annual rate of 38.4%.
The Chinese market’s growing demand for high-quality, traceable produce presents significant opportunities for Zimbabwe.
The zero-tariff policy is expected to further stimulate trade volumes and support local producers, said trade experts.
With this move, Zimbabwe is set to increase its exports to China, diversify its economy, and create new job opportunities.
The zero-tariff policy is a significant development in the economic relationship between Zimbabwe and China, and is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s economy.
