In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Fair Range community, a 35-year-old woman has been taken into custody by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for the alleged murder of her three-year-old daughter.
The suspect, Geviza Fadzai, is accused of stabbing the toddler to clear the path for a new marital relationship, before fabricating a series of cover-up stories about the child’s death.
The tragic incident, which occurred on November 25, 2025, only came to light during the victim’s burial preparations, when a family member noticed a severe injury on the child’s body.
According to police reports, Fadzai initially attempted to mislead her neighbours and local authorities with conflicting accounts of the event.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect first provided a detailed but false narrative to a neighbour immediately after the incident.
A police spokesperson, paraphrasing the initial account given to the neighbour, stated, “The suspect allegedly claimed that her daughter had been attacked by a group of four unknown assailants, who she said were responsible for the fatal injury.”
Unsatisfied with that story, Fadzai then proceeded to the village head, where she presented a completely different and less suspicious version of events.
The spokesperson further explained, “When she approached the traditional leader, she changed her story entirely, coolly asserting that the young girl had succumbed to natural causes, a claim that was accepted at the time.”
This gruesome deception began to unravel as the community gathered to mourn the child.
It was during these final arrangements that a relative observed a deep cut on the toddler’s neck, prompting immediate alarm and a subsequent report to the ZRP Mkwasine station.
Launching a swift investigation, police investigators quickly dismantled Fadzai’s web of lies.
Their findings pointed to a chilling motive behind the filicide.
Outlining the alleged motive, the police spokesperson said, “Our investigations established that the suspect allegedly killed her own daughter so that she could marry her new boyfriend, who was reportedly unwilling to commit to a relationship with her while she had a child.”
The three-year-old victim’s body was transported to Chiredzi General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to formally determine the exact cause of death.
Geviza Fadzai now awaits her initial court appearance, facing a charge of murder, as the community of Village 2, Fair Range, grapples with the horrifying nature of a crime that has left a profound sense of grief and disbelief.
