A 45-year-old man, Wirimai Gowero, is currently facing charges of sodomising a fellow inmate at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
Gowero was remanded in custody by Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa and advised to approach the High Court for bail.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred in October 2025, when Gowero allegedly assaulted and sodomised his cellmate.
The victim reported the attack to the prison officer on duty, prompting the authorities to take action.
“The accused person is alleged to have committed a serious offence, and the court needs to ensure that he remains in custody pending trial,” said Rufaro Chonzi, representing the State.
Gowero’s case highlights the issue of prison violence and the need for increased measures to protect inmates.

“The victim is still recovering from the trauma, and it’s crucial that the accused is held accountable for his actions,” Chonzi added.
