Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has clarified the injury situations of several Warriors players, citing medical assessments and protocols in place to ensure player welfare.
The clarification comes after several players were dropped from the national team camp, sparking concerns over their availability for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to ZIFA, Walter Musona, who was expected to join the team, is currently undergoing medical evaluation after injuring his hamstring during a match against Algeria in Saudi Arabia.
“He injured his hamstring vs Algeria in Saudi Arabia and did not train ahead of the Qatar match due to pain,” ZIFA stated, adding that Musona had been instructed to bring an ultrasound scan but failed to submit it.
However, Musona has rubbished ZIFA’s claims, posting on social media that he is “1000% fit”.
The forward’s assertion contradicts the official statement from ZIFA, which said Musona would only rejoin the squad once cleared by medical officials.
ZIFA also revealed that several other players, including Emmanuel Jalai, Tymone Machope, Junior Makunike, Xolani Ndlovu, and Andrew Mbeba, have been released from camp due to various injuries.
Jalai, who picked up a contusion injury against Triangle, is expected to return to camp on Thursday for further assessment.
“The medical team continues to assess every player to ensure fitness for national duty,” ZIFA stated, emphasising its commitment to transparency and top-level player welfare.
The association also noted that GPS data had confirmed the injury developments during training.
As a result of the injury setbacks, the technical team will broaden its pool, and some players who were not on the original 55-man list will be added as preparations for AFCON intensify.
ZIFA assured fans that it is doing everything possible to field a competitive team in the upcoming tournament.
ZIFA’s statement read, “Because of these injury developments, the technical team will broaden its pool, and some players who were not on the original 55-man list will be added as preparations for AFCON intensify.”
The association remains committed to keeping stakeholders informed about the team’s progress and player availability.
The development comes as Zimbabwe prepares to face tough competition in the AFCON qualifiers, and fans are eager to see the team in action.
