The Zimbabwe national football team, (Warriors), is facing a tough time ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco, with Vice Captain Marshall Munetsi and Jordan Zemura missing out on the tournament due to injuries.
Munetsi, who plays for Wolverhampton FC, expressed his disappointment and frustration, saying he was hurt by the lost opportunity to represent his country.
“This one hurts, as representing the Warriors has always been a dream, and wearing our colors is the greatest honor of my career. AFCON would have been even more significant,” he said in a statement.
The midfielder claimed that his club, Wolves, had communicated with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) about his recovery progress and even offered medical support to ensure his participation in the tournament.
However, he received no follow-up communication, leading him to feel that decisions were made without proper consideration.
“I had an injury recently, but my club, Wolves, communicated with the association that I was recovering well and even offered medical support to ensure that I could participate in the AFCON. Unfortunately, I received no follow-up communication, and decisions were made without clarity speculation that wasn’t the case,” Munetsi added.
Despite his disappointment, Munetsi emphasized his unwavering support for the national team.
“While I’m hurt, my unwavering support for the national team remains strong. I respect the coach’s decisions and stand behind the boys wholeheartedly. I will always be ready to defend the nation I love,” he said.
Munetsi’s absence is a significant blow to the Warriors, who will face Egypt, Angola, and South Africa in Group B.
Coach Marian “Super Mario” Marinica made a tough decisions, citing Munetsi’s injury as a factor in his omission from the squad.
Zemura, who plays for Udinese, is also out of action due to a thigh injury suffered in a Serie A match against Genoa.
The Warriors will need to regroup and find a way to overcome these setbacks if they are to make a mark in the tournament.
