A devastating mass shooting unfolded at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday, targeting a Jewish Hanukkah celebration and leaving at least 11 people dead and 29 injured.
The attack, which occurred around 6:45 pm local time, has been declared a terrorist incident by Australian authorities.
According to eyewitnesses, two gunmen dressed in black opened fire on the crowd from a footbridge, firing dozens of shots and sending people running for cover.
“Initially, you just think it’s a beautiful day down by the beach… Then more people ran past and said there’s a shooter, there’s a mass shooting and they’re killing people,” one witness described.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, stating, “This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith… an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed Albanese’s sentiments, saying, “What should have been a night of peace and joy was shattered by a horrifying, evil attack… designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community.”
The attack has sparked an outpouring of condemnation from world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who blamed Australia’s policies for fueling antisemitism, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated, “Antisemitism has no place in this world.”
A remarkable act of bravery was displayed by a bystander who tackled one of the gunmen and wrestled the firearm from him, likely saving countless lives.
“That man is a genuine hero, and I’ve got no doubt that there are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery,” Minns said.
The incident has raised concerns about antisemitism in Australia, with Jewish leaders warning that the community is feeling increasingly vulnerable.
Australia has experienced a string of antisemitic attacks since the war in Gaza began in October 2023.
The investigation is ongoing, with police searching for a possible third gunman and examining suspected improvised explosive devices found near the scene.
