Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zacharia, the legendary Sungura musician, was laid to rest in Chiweshe, Zimbabwe, amidst controversy surrounding his Muslim burial rites.

The ceremony, which took place on Sunday, sparked widespread debate on social media, with many expressing shock and surprise that women were not allowed to reach the graveyard and that the coffin was broken apart.

According to reports, Zacharia’s body was removed from the casket, which was dismantled, and interred wrapped in white cloth, in accordance with Islamic burial customs.

This move has left many in shock, given Zacharia’s stage name “Madzibaba,” which is often associated with apostolic faith practices.

“It’s confusing to see Madzibaba being buried in a Muslim culture,” said Tafadzwa Kadigo, a social media user.

“I thought he was a Christian,” he added.

Others defended the family’s decision, stressing that burial rites are determined by personal belief and family wishes rather than public perception or stage identity.

“Madzibaba’s burial is a reminder that burial rites are a personal choice,” said a source close to the family.

Zacharia, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 69, was a highly respected musician and mentor who played a significant role in shaping the careers of many artists, including Alick Macheso.

“Madzibaba was more than a mentor; he was a father figure,” Macheso said in a eulogy.

“He taught me discipline, humility, and the importance of hard work,” he said.

The funeral service, held at Chibuku Stadium in Chitungwiza, drew hundreds of mourners, including government officials, musicians, and fans from across the country.

Deputy Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Emily Jesaya described Zacharia as a “principled artiste, disciplined mentor, and rare role model whose life set a powerful standard for Zimbabwe’s arts sector.”

Zacharia’s legacy extends beyond his music, with many praising his commitment to discipline, respect, and humility.

“He was a great teacher, not just through his music, but through his life,” Jesaya said.

The controversy surrounding Zacharia’s burial highlights the complexities of cultural identity and personal choice, and serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting individual wishes and traditions.
