Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited has issued an urgent advisory to consumers to remain vigilant against counterfeit beverages, warning that tampered products are infiltrating the market and posing major risks to public health and brand integrity.
The warning comes as the company celebrates the massive commercial success of its “Mazoe Magic Buy and Win” promotion, which saw sales volumes for the iconic brand soar to 121,000 hectolitres over a two month period.
Speaking at the conclusion of the promotion, Schweppes Managing Director Stanley Muchenje acknowledged that while the flagship Mazoe brand has not yet seen a major influx of fakes, the rise of counterfeit goods remains a pressing national challenge.
“It is a problem that we have as a country and as a company we are very watchful of,” Muchenje said.
“Our taste is very unique and our packaging is well known, so you should be able to reach out and raise issues should you see any problems.” He added.
Muchenje urged the public to scrutinize packaging before purchase, highlighting specific safety features designed to guarantee product authenticity.
“Critically, never buy a product that has been tampered with.
All our lids have tamper-proof facilities that allow you to see that this has not been opened and that it is fresh out of the factory.”
Despite the concerns over illicit trade, the company’s recent marketing efforts have yielded record engagement.
The Mazoe Magic Buy and Win Promotion, which ran from October to November, was launched to commemorate the brand’s 95-year history in Zimbabwe.
