A 51‑year‑old man from Makwasha village, Innocent Nyamandi, was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment after being convicted of attempted murder for dousing his wife, Sibongile Chikozho, with petrol and setting her ablaze while she carried their 11‑month‑old baby on her back.
According to Prosecutor Melissa Muriva Makombe, the attack occurred on 23 November when Nyamandi, returning from Mberengwa, confronted Chikozho at her shop over alleged infidelity.
“He accused the complainant of infidelity, which led to a misunderstanding. The accused then poured petrol on the complainant and set her alight with a cigarette lighter before fleeing the scene, leaving her engulfed in flames,” Makombe told the court.
Magistrate Tawenga Sangster told the court that, “The sentence reflects the gravity of the crime.”
Sangster imposed a nine‑year term, of which two years are suspended provided Nyamandi commits no similar offence within five years, meaning he will serve seven years behind bars.
According to the court record, Chikozho suffered severe burns to her head, back, chest and both arms; the infant, strapped to her back, narrowly escaped injury.
Emergency services rushed her to a local hospital where she received critical care for life‑threatening injuries.
“The couple’s 11‑month‑old baby was strapped to Ms. Chikozho’s back at the time of the attack.”
The incident underscores the devastating consequences of domestic disputes and the urgent need for interventions to curb such violence.
Paraphrasing community impact statements, neighbors described the attack as “shocking” and called for stronger protections for victims of domestic abuse.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Nyamandi’s arrest shortly after the blaze and said investigations highlighted a pattern of escalating marital discord.
The couple, who share two children, had a history of arguments that culminated in Nyamandi’s fatal outburst.
Legal experts note the sentence balances punishment with a deterrent message, while victim‑support groups stress the lasting physical and emotional scars on Chikozho.
Zimbabwean authorities continue to grapple with rising cases of gender‑based violence, prompting calls for community education and stricter enforcement of protective measures.
The case remains a stark reminder of the lethal potential of domestic disputes when left unresolved.
