Zimbabwe National Blood Bank Runs Out of Blood, NBSZ Issues Urgent Appeal

The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has issued an urgent appeal for donors as the country’s blood bank reserves plummeted to critical levels this week, leaving some stocks with less than a 24-hour supply.

The organization, which is mandated by law to collect and distribute blood nationwide, revealed that current reserves are fluctuating between one and two days’ supply.

This is below the NBSZ’s safety benchmark of a five-day buffer required to handle emergencies comfortably.

Speaking during a national blood campaign on Thursday, NBSZ Blood Supply Executive Menard Mutenherwa emphasized that the shortage has forced the organization to look toward the private sector to bridge the gap.

Meanwhile, a key partnership with Redan Zimbabwe has been activated to reach working adults and families through mobile blood drives at fuel stations across major cities, including Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, and Gweru.

“Saving lives is a collective effort that cuts across sectors,” Mutenherwa said.

“Partnerships like these strengthen our ability to meet national blood requirements, and we encourage other private sector organizations to come forward.”

The shortage comes at a high-pressure period for the health sector, as the demand for blood remains high following the festive season.

Mutenherwa described the management of the blood bank as a moving target, noting that while units are replenished throughout the day, the rate of consumption often outpaces donations.

“At any given snapshot, we are critically low, which is why we are appealing to the public,” he said.

He reminded citizens that a single donation has the potential to save up to three lives, particularly for maternal health cases, accident victims, and patients undergoing emergency surgeries.

The NBSZ is urging all eligible donors to visit their static clinics or mobile stations. In an effort to boost numbers, some partner locations, such as Redan sites, have previously offered tokens of appreciation, such as fuel coupons, to those who donate.

“The sustainability of our blood supply depends on consistent donations,” Mutenherwa concluded.

“We encourage people to come forward with confidence, knowing their contribution truly makes a difference.” He added.
