The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally opened multiple investigations into serious incidents of alleged misconduct during two high-stakes quarter-final matches at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

The continental governing body announced it is probing events surrounding the Cameroon versus Morocco and Algeria versus Nigeria fixtures, citing collected match reports and video evidence.

In an official statement released today, CAF revealed it has taken the decisive step of referring these matters to its independent Disciplinary Board for a full investigation.

The organization emphasized its commitment to addressing any breaches of its strict code of conduct.

CAF has explicitly called for appropriate sanctions to be levied against any players or officials identified as being involved in wrong doing once the review is complete.

Beyond the on-pitch incidents, CAF is also examining a separate controversy involving members of the press.

The body confirmed it is actively reviewing footage of an altercation that allegedly occurred in the mixed zone area, a designated space for post-match interviews, where media representatives are accused of having misbehaved.

This parallel review underscores the breadth of the disciplinary actions being undertaken in the aftermath of the tournament’s tense knockout stages.

The statement from CAF included a firm condemnation of all acts that violate the spirit of the competition.

A CAF spokesperson strongly reiterated the organization’s zero-tolerance policy, particularly when such behaviour is directed at match officials or event organizers.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organizers,” the statement read.

This clearly underscores the federation’s primary concern regarding the safety and respect afforded to referees, a recurring point of contention in high-pressure matches.

The spokesperson further warned that the body would pursue all available avenues to hold offenders accountable, stating unequivocally that “appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”

These investigations cast a shadow over the conclusion of the prestigious tournament, highlighting the intense pressures that characterize its latter stages.

The quarter-final match between Algeria and Nigeria was a particularly volatile affair, ending in a 2-1 victory for Nigeria and marred by on-field scuffles at the final whistle.

Meanwhile, the clash between hosts Morocco and Cameroon, which the Moroccans won 1-0, also featured moments of heightened tension that are now under formal scrutiny.

The Disciplinary Board’s proceedings will now determine the specifics of the alleged violations and identify the responsible individuals.

Potential outcomes could range from fines to suspensions, affecting both the implicated individuals and their national associations.

CAF’s swift action aims to uphold the integrity of the competition and send a clear message that professional standards are non-negotiable, as the football community awaits the board’s findings and subsequent sanctions.
