Renowned Zimbabwean-born business tycoon, Mutumwa Mawere, has passed away at the age of 66 in South Africa.
Mawere, who was a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s business landscape, died on Thursday morning at a hospital in South Africa, just days after celebrating his 66th birthday on January 11, 2026.
Mawere’s business empire was vast, with interests in mining, manufacturing, agro-industries, financial services, telecommunications, publishing, investment holdings, transport, and logistics.
He was the founder of Africa Resources Limited (ARL), a conglomerate that became one of Zimbabwe’s most influential corporations.
However, Mawere’s success was not without controversy.
His business empire was seized by the Zimbabwean government in 2004, citing allegations of prejudicing the state of over Z$300 billion.
Mawere maintained his innocence, arguing that the seizure was politically motivated and unlawful.
This led to a prolonged legal battle that played out in courts in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.
In a 2018 interview, Mawere emphasized the importance of secure property rights, stating, “The issue at hand transcends my personal interests. It is about whether the rule of law or the rule of men will govern economic life in Africa. Secure property rights are the bedrock of any investment and development.”
Tributes have poured in from the business community, with colleagues and acquaintances describing Mawere as a visionary and a natural architect of enterprise.
Raymond Chamba, a colleague, remembered Mawere as “a once-in-a-generation intellectual force and a natural architect of enterprise.”
The cause of Mawere’s death has not been disclosed, and formal statements from the Mawere family and relevant authorities are awaited.
Mawere’s legacy is complex, with some viewing him as a fallen hero and others as a symbol of a fraught economic period in Zimbabwe’s history.
