A valiant unbeaten knock of 97 from Brian Bennett was not enough to prevent Zimbabwe from slipping to a 72-run defeat against India in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super Eight encounter at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.

Chasing a mammoth target of 257, the Chevrons were restricted to 184 for six, suffering a loss that officially ends their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

While the result was a disappointment for the African side, the performance of the 22-year-old opener provided a significant silver lining in an otherwise difficult outing.

Bennett, who has been a beacon of consistency for Zimbabwe, anchored the run-chase with a composed 97 off just 59 deliveries.

His innings, which included eight boundaries and six maximums, marked his third fifty of the tournament and his 12th in T20 cricket.

Reflecting on his knock, Bennett acknowledged the quality of the Indian attack but expressed pride in his team’s fighting spirit.

“It is always special to spend time in the middle against a world-class bowling attack like India’s. Obviously, the result is not what we wanted, but as a batting unit, we believed we could go after the target,” Bennett said.

He emphasized the team’s positive intent despite the steep asking rate.

“We never put a ceiling on ourselves. Even when the required rate was climbing, the message in the dressing room was to keep swinging hard. Personally, I felt in good rhythm, and it was about building partnerships, but we kept losing wickets at crucial times.”

Zimbabwe’s chase got off to a shaky start, with the top order failing to provide Bennett with the support required to overhaul the imposing total.

Captain Sikandar Raza contributed 31, but regular strikes from India’s disciplined bowling attack stifled any momentum.

The foundation for India’s victory was laid earlier in the day after Zimbabwe won the toss and opted to field.

The decision backfired as the defending champions unleashed a brutal batting assault, amassing a formidable 256 for four.

Abhishek Sharma set the tone with a rapid 55 from 30 balls, while captain Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a blistering 33 off just 13 deliveries.

However, it was the late assault from the lower middle order that propelled India past the 250-mark.

Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 50 from 23 balls, while Tilak Varma provided the finishing touches with a whirlwind 44 not out off 16 deliveries.

Zimbabwean skipper Raza admitted that his bowlers struggled to contain the Indian hitters during the crucial death overs.

“We felt we were in the game for parts of the first innings, but the last four or five overs completely shifted the momentum away from us,” Raza said.

He credited the opposition’s execution under pressure.

“Credit to Pandya and Tilak; they played exceptional shots. When you are defending a total like that, you need early wickets, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get them consistently. Brian was exceptional tonight. To bat the way he did against that bowling attack shows his class and temperament. It is a learning curve for us, and we will take that fight into our last game.”

Zimbabwe’s bowlers shared the wickets, with Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Tinotenda Maposa, and Raza each claiming one scalp, but they proved expensive.

In response, India’s bowling unit maintained relentless pressure.

Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of three for 24, while spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel provided crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs.

The victory revitalizes India’s campaign as they prepare to face the West Indies in their final Super Eight fixture.

For Zimbabwe, the focus now shifts to restoring pride when they take on South Africa on Sunday.

Though eliminated from semi-final contention, the team will be eager to conclude their tournament on a positive note.
