The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League enters a new era this weekend when Chahwanda Stadium becomes the latest venue to host top-flight football, with defending champions Scottland FC set to face promoted side Hardrock FC in the season opener at the brand-new facility.

The Midlands community has waited decades for this moment.

For the first time in the city’s football history, a Premier Soccer League match will be played on Kwekwe soil, marking a significant development for the region’s sporting infrastructure.

Scottland FC coach Norman Mapeza expressed his team’s excitement about being part of this historic occasion ahead of their title defence kickoff.

“We are truly honoured to be part of this milestone for Zimbabwean football,” Mapeza said.

“Chahwanda Stadium is a beautiful facility that meets all the required standards, and we expect a fantastic atmosphere. Playing the first ever PSL match here adds extra motivation for my players, though our focus remains on starting our title defence with maximum points.”

The champions enter the campaign with high expectations after their remarkable triumph last season.

Mapeza acknowledged the pressure that comes with the crown but emphasised his squad’s readiness for the challenges ahead.

“Being champions means everyone wants to beat you,” he added.

“We have prepared thoroughly during the off-season and strengthened our squad in key areas. The players understand what is required, and we are determined to prove that last season was not a fluke.”

Hardrock FC arrive for their maiden top-flight appearance with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Coach Kelvin Kaindu spoke passionately about his team’s journey to the elite division and their ambitions for the historic fixture.

“This is what dreams are made of for everyone associated with Hardrock Football Club,” Kaindu stated.

“We have worked extremely hard to reach the Premier Soccer League, and now we have the privilege of playing the champions in the first ever top-flight match at this magnificent stadium.

My players are not here just to make up numbers. We intend to compete and show that we belong at this level.”

Kaindu acknowledged the size of the challenge facing his newly promoted side but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion.

“Scottland are champions for a reason,” he conceded.

“They have quality throughout their squad and a winning mentality. However, football is played on the pitch, not on paper. We have prepared tactically and mentally for this moment. If we execute our game plan effectively, we can cause an upset and announce ourselves in the perfect way.”

The match represents more than just a league fixture for the Kwekwe community.

Local football supporters have long campaigned for top-flight action in their city, and the opening of Chahwanda Stadium finally delivers on that promise.

Meanwhile, another Midlands venue prepares for blockbuster action as Ascot Stadium in Gweru hosts TelOne FC against traditional giants Dynamos FC on Saturday.

The WiFi Boys will rely on home advantage against a DeMbare side desperate to end their trophy drought this campaign.

The season officially commences Friday at Rufaro Stadium with FC Hunters taking on MWOS FC, setting the stage for a weekend featuring 16 matches across the country.

Saturday’s programme includes Herentals College facing Chicken Inn, a platinum derby between Ngezi Platinum Stars and FC Platinum at Baobab Stadium, and Triangle United hosting ZPC Kariba at Gibbo Stadium.

Sunday’s fixtures see CAPS United battle Agama FC at Rufaro, Manica Diamonds tackle Simba Bhora, while Highlanders renew their rivalry with Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields Stadium in what promises to be a fiery encounter.
