A Form One learner at Mushunje High School in Marange is facing a murder charge after a classroom misunderstanding left a fellow pupil dead, plunging the school and surrounding community into grief.

The juvenile, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at the Mutare Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Court records show that he appeared before provincial magistrate Poterai Gwezhira.

The magistrate advised him of the charge before deferring the matter to July 23 for routine remand.

The accused was released into the custody of his father.

The court ordered the parent to ensure the learner attends all future court appearances.

Prosecutor Tavonga Mawire outlined the State’s case.

He told the court that the fatal incident occurred on July 9 at Mushunje High School during normal lessons.

Mawire laid out the sequence of events as alleged by the State.

He said that on July 9, 2026, at around 12 noon, both the accused and the now deceased, who were Form One learners at Mushunje High School, were attending lessons in the same classroom.

He further explained the setting at the time.

According to him, there were 42 pupils in the classroom when a misunderstanding arose between the two learners.

The prosecutor described how the situation deteriorated.

He said the exchange quickly escalated into insults.

Mawire then detailed the alleged assault.

He claims the now deceased stood up and slapped the accused once.

The State alleges the response was immediate and fatal.

Mawire told the court that after being slapped, “the accused reacted by striking the now deceased once in the face with a clenched fist.”

He went on to explain the consequence of that blow.

“As a result of that blow, the now deceased lost balance and hit a classroom desk before falling to the ground, landing face down,” he said.

Teachers and pupils intervened quickly.

The prosecution said that teachers and fellow pupils rushed to assist the learner after he collapsed before he was taken for medical attention.

“Efforts to save him were unsuccessful,” said Prosecutor.

Mawire informed the court that the now deceased was transported to Mushunje Clinic for treatment but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The death has left deep scars in Marange.

Community members described the incident as a tragedy that has sent shockwaves through the area, with the case highlighting the devastating consequences that can arise from seemingly minor disagreements among schoolchildren.

School authorities have not yet issued a formal statement, but sources at Mushunje High said counseling was being offered to pupils who witnessed the incident.

Legal proceedings are expected to focus on witness testimony.

The State indicated its next steps.

Prosecutors said, “the State is expected to lead evidence from witnesses who were allegedly present in the class when the incident occurred.”

As of now, the court has placed the accused in the care of his father as the case proceeds.

The matter will return on July 23, when the court is expected to set the next stage for trial.

Parents and teachers in Marange say the tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly tempers can turn.

What began as an argument between two 13-year-olds in a crowded classroom has ended with one child facing a murder charge and another child laid to rest.
