The Netherlands will close its embassy in Harare as part of a major restructuring of its worldwide diplomatic network.
The embassy confirmed the planned closure in a statement, saying it was part of a broader strategic review of Dutch missions abroad.
The move will affect the Netherlands’ presence in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, where the Harare mission has served as a key hub for development cooperation, trade and consular services.
“The Netherlands has announced changes to its worldwide diplomatic network, including the planned closure of the embassy in Harare,” the embassy said.
“We recognise that this is significant news for our partners and friends in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, given the many strong relationships we have built over the years,” it added.
The embassy stressed that the decision does not signal a deterioration in bilateral relations.
“The decision is part of a broader restructuring of the Netherlands’ diplomatic network and does not change our appreciation for the close ties or our commitment to working with the respective governments and other partners across the region,” the statement said.
The embassy said it is focused on ensuring a careful transition and continued cooperation with its networks in the period ahead.
No timeline has been given for the closure, nor has it been announced which mission will assume responsibility for Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. Diplomatic observers expect the functions to be reassigned to another regional hub, likely Pretoria.
The closure comes as several Western nations consolidate their diplomatic presence due to budget pressures and shifting foreign policy priorities.
