Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed the two final ambitions driving him as he approaches the twilight of his record-breaking career: reaching 1,000 official goals and lifting another UEFA Nations League trophy with Portugal.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of what will be his 234th cap for Portugal against Wales, the 41-year-old forward confirmed he has no intention of walking away from the international stage.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner admitted he seriously considered ending his Portugal career following the World Cup round-of-16 exit at the hands of Spain, but has since recommitted himself under new head coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo, who currently sits on 979 career goals for club and country, hit back at domestic critics who have suggested his time in the national team is over.
He insisted he remains fully motivated to guide Portugal’s emerging generation and to serve as a role model for young supporters across the globe.
With just 21 goals separating him from the mythical 1,000-goal milestone, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus star has set himself a target few in football history have ever approached.
His continued presence in the squad has divided opinion at home, with some pundits arguing his place should go to younger players.
However, Ronaldo was characteristically defiant, making it clear he believes he still has plenty to offer both on and off the pitch.
As Portugal prepare to face Wales, all eyes will be on Ronaldo to see whether he can edge closer to his 1,000-goal dream and prove that, even at 41, he remains capable of delivering silverware for his country.
