Zimbabwean football entered a new administrative chapter today as Isaiah Mupfurutsa and Chido Chizondo were elected to lead the nation’s top men’s and women’s leagues respectively, following pivotal elections held in the capital.

In a closely watched contest for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairperson, Isaiah Mupfurutsa, the current chairman of top-flight club Simba Bhora, emerged victorious.

Mupfurutsa secured the mandate to oversee the administration of Zimbabwe’s elite men’s football competition, prevailing over a field of experienced challengers, Dumisani Sisale of reigning champions FC Platinum, Leonard Musariri from Ngezi Platinum Stars, and Masimba Chihowa of Manica Diamonds.

His election signals a potential shift in direction for the league, which faces ongoing challenges, including financial sustainability and infrastructure development.

The PSL leadership structure was further solidified with the election of Kenneth Mhlophe, chairman of the iconic Highlanders FC, as Vice Chairperson.

Mhlophe secured the position unopposed, bringing his considerable club management experience to the league’s executive.

Completing the key appointments for the men’s league, Moses Maunganidze(Dynamos) and Oscah Nduwure(TelOne FC) were elected as members of the crucial Emergency Committee, responsible for urgent league decisions.

Simultaneously, at the same Harare venue, the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) held its elections alongside its Annual General Meeting, ushering in its own new leadership. Chido Chizondo, representing Platinum Royals FC, was elected as the new Chairperson of the women’s top flight.

Chizondo takes the helm at a time when women’s football in Zimbabwe is striving for greater visibility, investment, and competitive structure.

She will be supported by Lewis Muzhara, a noted benefactor of women’s football in the country, who was elected unopposed as Vice Chairperson.

Muzhara’s appointment underscores the ongoing need for dedicated support and resources to grow the women’s game.

The newly constituted ZWPSL Board of Directors will include Mercy Makuwatsine, James Shamuyarira Mupfudza, Rugwevera Sibusisiwe Dube, and Talent Chitsaka

This diverse board faces the immediate task of building on recent momentum and addressing the specific developmental needs of the women’s league.

The dual elections mark a significant day for Zimbabwean football governance.

Both Mupfurutsa and Chizondo inherit leagues with passionate followings but also facing significant pressures.

The PSL, under Mupfurutsa, must navigate commercial pressures and competitive balance, while the ZWPSL, led by Chizondo, requires focused efforts on sponsorship, player welfare, and elevating the league’s profile nationally and continentally.

The football community will now watch closely as these new administrations begin their tenures, tasked with steering Zimbabwe’s premier leagues towards a more prosperous and stable future.
