Ruzvidzo Freedom, 32, of Hatcliffe, Harare, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after a Harare magistrate found him guilty of reckless driving for travelling against oncoming traffic at the busy Second Street (Sam Nujoma) and Upper East Road intersection.

Prosecutors said the defendant was driving a Toyota Hiace and deliberately entered a one-way lane during rush hour, obstructing other motorists and creating a serious risk to public safety.

Although no injuries were reported from the incident, the court concluded that Freedom’s conduct had placed members of the public at risk and warranted a custodial sentence.

The National Prosecuting Authority described the case as an example of behaviour that cannot be tolerated on city roads, and issued a stern warning.

Paraphrasing their stance, the NPA emphasised the gravity of such offences before declaring: “RECKLESS DRIVING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.”

In addition to the prison term, the court cancelled Freedom’s driver’s licence and imposed a permanent prohibition on him from operating vehicles in classes 2, 4 and 5 categories that include minibuses, trucks and heavy vehicles.

The prosecution underscored that penalties for dangerous driving are intended to deter repeat conduct and protect road users, and stated explicitly: “OFFENDERS WILL FACE HARSH PENALTIES, INCLUDING IMPRISONMENT AND LIFETIME DRIVING BANS.”

Court records show the traffic breach occurred at a peak traffic period, with the Hiace moving against the flow and obstructing traffic rather than yielding to established lane directions.

Court officials noted that while there were no casualties on this occasion, the potential for catastrophic harm was clear and influenced sentencing.

Reiterating the priority of community safety, the NPA urged drivers to obey traffic regulations and consider the consequences of negligent actions.

Restating their public-safety message, they warned: “PUBLIC SAFETY COMES FIRST EVERY RECKLESS DRIVER IS A POTENTIAL KILLER ON OUR ROADS.”

Freedom will serve the sentence immediately, according to court directives, and the lifetime driving prohibition will prevent him from legally operating specified classes of vehicles in future.

The NPA said the verdict should serve as a deterrent to others who flout traffic laws.
