A 25-year-old man from Mvuma, Simbarashe Mafeta, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for setting a family’s hut on fire, narrowly missing the lives of a mother and her four young children.
The incident occurred on August 17, 2025, in Village 72, Huchu, after a dispute over missing chickens escalated into violence.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Mafeta confronted the 38-year-old victim, accusing her of allowing her dog to eat his chickens.
When she refused to come outside, Mafeta turned violent and set the hut on fire while the family was still inside.
“The offender proceeded to set fire to the hut while the family was inside,” the NPAZ stated.
The mother and her children, aged between five and ten, screamed for help as flames engulfed their home.
Neighbors rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the family just in time, preventing a potential tragedy.
However, the fire destroyed property worth US$2,000, leaving the family homeless and destitute.
Mafeta was arrested and convicted of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
He was handed a nine-year sentence, with two years suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving him to serve seven years effectively.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay US$2,000 in restitution to the victims.
The NPAZ condemned the attack, highlighting the dangers of minor disputes escalating into serious violence.
“It’s a sobering fact that a significant number of murder cases originate from seemingly meaningless altercations. We urge individuals to seek third-party mediation as a constructive alternative to violence,” the statement read.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and the devastating consequences of unchecked anger.
The community has been left shaken by the brutality of the crime, with village elders describing the incident as “a sad example of how anger can destroy lives.”
As Mafeta begins his prison sentence, the affected family faces the daunting task of rebuilding their lives with the support of their community.
