Real Madrid has issued a public apology after mistakenly using a photo of Elche striker Andre da Silva in a tribute video to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car crash in July.
The error occurred during the club’s Ordinary General Assembly, where the video was shown to honor notable figures who passed away this year.
According to Real Madrid’s statement on X, “Real Madrid CF apologises to Elche CF and its player André da Silva for having mistakenly included his image in the obituary of an institutional video instead of that of André Silva, the brother of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player.”
The club expressed regret for the incident, acknowledging it as a human error.
The mistake was particularly unfortunate given the circumstances, as Andre da Silva is a current player for Elche, the team Real Madrid was set to face in a La Liga match.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw, with Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez offering a verbal apology for the mistake during the assembly.
Earlier in November, Real Madrid representatives, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and manager Xabi Alonso, paid tribute to Jota at Anfield before their Champions League match against Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold, a former teammate of Jota’s, wrote a heartfelt message on a card attached to a wreath, saying, “My mate Diogo, you are so missed but still so loved. Yours and Andre’s memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you mate, every day. Love Trent and family.”
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, died in a car accident in northern Spain, leaving the football world in mourning.
The brothers were remembered by their clubs and teammates, with Liverpool and Real Madrid paying their respects.
