Two members of the Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church, Prosper Katiyo (29) and Leoba Mabonzo (27), died on Saturday night after machete-wielding robbers stormed a prayer vigil on a mountain in Mazowe.

The victims, from Chasauka Village in Mutoko, allegedly slipped and fell to their deaths while fleeing from the armed gang in darkness.

The attack occurred during an all-night gathering attended by dozens of congregants seeking spiritual renewal.

The robbers suddenly appeared, armed with machetes, and began threatening worshippers while demanding cash and mobile phones.

Panic set in as terrified congregants scattered in all directions, navigating the treacherous terrain.

“We urge all religious groups to prioritize safety when selecting places of worship,” said Inspector Milton Mundembe, spokesperson for the Mashonaland Central police. “Isolated cliffs and mountainous areas, especially at night, pose serious hazards.”

The police are treating the case as a sudden death resulting from traumatic injuries.

A manhunt has been launched to track down the suspects, and authorities are appealing for information to assist in identifying and arresting the attackers.

“The long arm of the law will bring them to justice,” the police assured.

Authorities have also advised religious organizations and the public to avoid holding nighttime gatherings in remote or poorly secured environments.

The incident has triggered public outrage, with community members and religious leaders condemning the attack on innocent worshippers.
