uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) supporters are marching in Johannesburg today in a show of solidarity with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who last week alleged that there are political interferences in an investigation into political killings.
The demonstration serves as a precursor to a planned national shutdown at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.
Mkhwanazi’s claims, which he leveled against now-suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, have ignited a political firestorm.
In a national address last night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the appointment of Prof. Firoz Cachalia as acting minister and revealed that a commission of inquiry, chaired by acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, will be established to investigate Mkhwanazi’s allegations.
Abel Tau, the Gauteng Spokesperson, asserted that the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) fundamentally means South Africa is now independent. He further stated that Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi’s recent significant disclosure unfortunately corroborated their long-held suspicion, that South Africa has been compromised, not only by white economic interests but also by criminal entities.
“We all know that with the advent of the GNU (Government of National Unity) basically South Africa is on its own…I think after the explosive revelation by Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, he has unfortunately confirmed what we have always believed, that this country has been taken over, not only by white capital for its own interest also by criminal elements.” he said.
