A 21-year-old man from the Budiriro suburb of Harare has died after a disturbing incident in which he reportedly cut his own flesh and threw himself into fire.
The man, identified as Aaron Mutize, succumbed to injuries.
According to witnesses, Mutize used broken ceramic plates to inflict severe cuts on himself before setting himself on fire.
He died from his injuries and severe blood loss while being transported to the hospital.
He has since been buried in his rural hometown of Masvingo.
Police have not yet received an official report on the incident.
However, reports from the local community describe Mutize’s behavior as increasingly erratic in the days leading up to his death.
One resident, who was identified as Ambuya Ashumba, said she had heard loud, strange noises coming from Mutize’s home the night before his death.
She noted that his mother confirmed he had been unwell.
Another neighbour, Takanaka Pazorora, reported that Mutize had destroyed window panes and threatened children in the house before leaving.
Witnesses also claim that he smeared blood on the walls and doors of his home.
Tawanda Guvamombe, one of the witnesses, described seeing Mutize at a local shrine just before the incident.
Guvamombe stated that Mutize, behaving erratically, threw himself into a fire while calling for divine intervention.
Other witnesses said he had also been seen eating his own cooked flesh.
