A chilling discovery has been made in Zapopan, Mexico, where authorities have unearthed a mass grave containing 48 bags filled with human remains.

The clandestine grave, located in a region controlled by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has intensified fears over the scale of mass killings linked to organized crime.

According to Blanca Trujillo, Deputy State Prosecutor for Missing Persons, “We need to make progress on the forensic issue so that we can tell you how many victims this number of bags represents.”

The bags were first discovered four weeks ago by a local search group on a vacant lot in Zapopan, a municipality within the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

The search operation has required heavy machinery due to the size of the site and is being supported by the Guerreros Buscadores collective and the National Commission for the Search for Persons.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of uncovering additional remains.

This gruesome discovery adds to a growing list of mass graves in Jalisco, the Mexican state hardest hit by the country’s missing persons crisis.

Nationwide, more than 127,000 people have disappeared since 2006, when the federal government launched a military crackdown on drug cartels.

Jalisco alone has over 15,900 reported cases of missing persons, a toll widely attributed to the CJNG.

The CJNG, led by Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” has been linked to mass killings, torture, and forced recruitment.

In February, the United States designated CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization due to its role in fentanyl trafficking.

The cartel has also been accused of using fake job advertisements to lure recruits, some of whom are later tortured or killed.

The latest findings in Zapopan highlight the scale of cartel-linked violence and the urgent need for justice in Mexico’s deepening humanitarian crisis.

As forensic teams continue to work tirelessly to determine the number of victims, the international community is urged to take note of the escalating violence in Mexico.

The discovery of the mass grave serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of organized crime on communities and the need for sustained efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.
