Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has bemoaned the poor living conditions of Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) members, saying many are forced to share housing accommodation, with some dividing rooms with curtains, a situation he describes as deplorable and unbefitting for officers who serve and protect the nation.
According to Minister Kazembe, the welfare of police officers must be prioritized, as decent living conditions are key to enhancing morale, discipline, and professionalism within the force.
“The welfare of police officers must be prioritized,” Kazembe stressed.
“Decent living conditions are key to enhancing morale, discipline, and professionalism within the force.”
The Minister’s comments highlight the challenges faced by police officers in Zimbabwe, who often work long hours in difficult conditions, putting their lives at risk to maintain law and order.
Many officers are forced to endure substandard living conditions, which can impact their health, well-being, and job performance.
Kazembe urged for increased budgetary support to ensure the construction of adequate and modern housing units, thereby restoring dignity to officers and changing the current narrative surrounding their living standards.
“We need to increase budgetary support to ensure that our police officers have access to decent housing,” Kazembe said.
“This is not just a matter of providing shelter, but about restoring dignity to our officers and changing the current narrative surrounding their living standards,” he added.
The Minister’s call for improved housing is part of a broader effort to improve the welfare of police officers in Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has long struggled with inadequate resources and infrastructure, including housing, vehicles, and equipment.
Kazembe’s comments are likely to put pressure on the government to prioritize the welfare of police officers and address the long-standing issue of inadequate housing.
