A 22 year old man identified as Blessing Mhembere has been arrested on charges of subverting a constitutional government after he was caught while encouraging people to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Zanu PF political party from power.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Mhembere was arrested while moving around a bus terminus at Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza where it is alleged that he advocated for the unlawful removal of President Mnangagwa’s government, using unconstitutional means.
“Witnesses claim that he was shouting at the top of his voice, encouraging and mobilizing individuals to ‘overthrow President Mnangagwa and the ZANU PF political party from power. Remove President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF political party from power,” he said.
Blessing is accused of requesting individuals possessing firearms to bring them along, suggesting he would employ them in his efforts.
“ He now faces charges of subverting the constitutional government, as outlined in section 22(2)(A) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. Furthermore, he is charged with incitement to subvert a constitutional government, as defined in section 187 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform),” ZLHR said on their official X account.
Mhembere’s case is expected to proceed through the legal system where he will be represented by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
