The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, Dr John Mushayavanhu has revealed that the physical notes and coins of the newly launched Zimbabwe Gold currency (ZIG) will start circulating today.
The development comes after the electronic version of the currency is already being used for various transactions. This publication understands that all local banks received the physical notes and coins yesterday from the Central Bank.
Dr Mushayavanhu said all modalities to have the new notes and coins in the market were completed yesterday .
“We will be seeing the new notes and coins effective this Tuesday (today). All the modalities have been completed and come tomorrow morning (today), Zimbabweans can begin to use the currency depending on the logistics of each bank.
“There is that need for Zimbabweans to use ZiG. I implore the nation to focus on a currency preservation system to facilitate ease and convenience to Zimbabwe. It is all about confidence and as the central bank, we are guaranteeing confidence in the economy,” said Dr Mushayavanhu.
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday encouraged the country to protect the new currency.
“I commend all Zimbabweans for the manner we have adopted and are protecting the use of our own currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). Congratulations, Makorokoto. This is our national currency and part of the symbols of our national identity and dignity,” said President Mnangagwa.
