Rise in Suicides Sparks Calls for Action to Protect Men’s Mental Health and Wellbeing

A growing concern is emerging about the exploitation of men in relationships with single mothers, with alarming rates of emotional manipulation, financial draining, and psychological abuse. This toxic dynamic has led to an increase in male suicides, leaving families and communities devastated.

“The pain is unbearable,” says Ronald Madziva, who lost his brother to suicide after years of emotional turmoil in a relationship with a single mother. “We need to break the silence and stigma surrounding men’s mental health. They deserve protection and support too.”

Experts warn that societal expectations and gender norms often silence men’s voices, making them vulnerable to exploitation. “Men are socialized to be strong and provide, but this can lead to emotional suppression and vulnerability,” notes Dr. Tendai Maramwidze, a relationship therapist.

Key statistics:

– 4 in 5 men experience emotional abuse in relationships with single mothers.
– 90% of men in such relationships report feeling trapped and helpless.
– Male suicides have increased by 20% in the past year, with relationship issues cited as a primary factor.

Survivor Stories:

Tapiwa’s Story:

“I never thought I’d fall victim to emotional manipulation,” says Tapiwa, a 42-year-old entrepreneur. “But she had a way of making me feel guilty for everything. I spent my entire savings on her and her kids, only to be left with nothing. The worst part was the emotional abuse – she’d call me names, make me feel worthless, and then pretend like nothing was wrong. I’m lucky to have escaped, but the scars still linger.”

Kutsirai’s Story:

Kutsirai, a 30-year-old teacher, shares his harrowing experience. “I thought I was helping a single mother in need, but she turned out to be a master manipulator. She’d use her children to guilt trip me into doing her bidding. I felt trapped, like I was walking on eggshells around her. The day I realized I had to leave was the day she threatened to falsely accuse me of abuse. I’m now seeking therapy to rebuild my self-worth.”

Kudzai’s Story:

“I lost myself in that relationship,” admits Kudzai, a 38-year-old engineer. “She made me feel like I was the only one who could provide for her and her kids. She would constantly belittle me, saying my manhood was smaller compared to her exes’. I worked multiple jobs, sacrificed my hobbies, and even gave up my own family to please her. But no matter what I did, it was never enough. The emotional toll was immense – I became anxious, depressed, and suicidal. Thankfully, I found support from friends and family, and I’m slowly rebuilding my life.”

NGOs and advocacy groups are calling for action. “It’s time to recognize men’s suffering and provide support,” says Nelson Mubvekeri, Director of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Zimbabwe. “We urge policymakers to allocate resources for male-focused mental health initiatives and relationship education programs.”
